June 28 That's Not Plastic????
Who knew that corn was so versatile??? All along I thought corn was jut another vegetable. Turns out that it has more uses than one. Today our Green Challenge for Chicago was distributing some alternative "Take Out" Containers!!
Though they didn't look any different than the typical plastic containers... they were. Made from Corn Resin, these containers are re-usable and bio degradable. We visited the Local Restaurants and informed them about this Eco Friendly alternative. The containers were very well received at the restaurants. They were excited to share this new option with their patrons.
We then took a stroll down to Trader Joe's to offer them the option of using some of the containers.
We offered our new friends at Trader Joe's some of Our Organic Cotton Tees. Were about to be on our way when they offered us some tasty Trader Joe's Beverages, on the house, to keep us hydrated on our "Green" Adventure. We were most grateful for that...thanks guys!!! Next we headed across the Street to a Mexican restaurant that we had spotted just across the Street. We figured they might be able to use the containers as well.
We strolled into the restaurant and got a chance to speak with the Manager, Jesus. We told him about the Corn Resin containers and how they were a more Eco Friendly alternative for the environment. He was interested in what we were doing on this Eco Trip and gladly accepted the containers. Jesus then went one step further and asked us if we had lunch yet. When we replied no, he then offered us to have lunch at the restaurant, on the house!!
Needless to say we were MORE thank grateful and appreciative of the offer. We Gladly accepted. We had some of the best Mexican food I have tasted since The Red Iguana in Salt Lake City!!!! As a thank you to the staff, we left them all with some of our Organic Cotton Tee Shirts.
We weren't able to finish all of our tasty meal, so the restaurant sent us on our way...with our leftovers in the Corn Resin Containers we had given them. It was good to see that they were going to use immediately!!!! That was a great end to a great Green Challenge today. Les and I took some time afterwards exploring the City of Chicago. Check out the new photo album to see photos from the rest of our day. Tomorrow we head to visit some local Green Businesses to talk with them and get a feel for how they are helping the environment. 'Til Next Time, Marshana, Miss Earth New York 2007 June 21 Chicago??? I thought We Were Going to Janesville????
Tuesday June 19, 2007 Traveling across using public transportation is exciting, yet challenging. Taking the train is a great way to see the country. However, sometime there can be complications along the way. Take a look at the latest video that I have posted. In it you will see how we ended up in Chicago and not in Janesville. Also, Check out the Chicago Picture Album for all the photos of the Journey. Tomorrow we are on our way to the Chevrolet Plant for a tour. I am excited to see how their cars go from "Parts" to the cars that we drive. See You in Janesville!!!! Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 June 18 A Tree Grows in...Omaha!!!!
Today we had the pleasure of working with The City of Omaha. They were kind enough to send a driver for us bright and early.
So we all piled into the van...with a very special plus one!!! A special guest was flown in to join us!!
We arrived at our secret location early and ready to go. I call it the "Secret" location because The City kept our assignment a surprise for us. And surprised we were when we arrived at Miller's Landing...the same location as Kris & Tim's Wedding that I had attended just two days prior!!! The City of Omaha had provided us with our very own tree to plant!!
Not before long we all get together and planted that tree. Leslie & I raising the tree into position...I'm not sure why, but I thought it was pretty fun!!
Melissa joined in and helped fill in the hole that was dug for the tree. With all of us pitching in, the tree was filled in quite soon and ready to grow!!
After a fun filler morning of tree planting we got a great opportunity to to a interview with the Local News on Fox 42!! We were so excited. After freshening up, we were ready for the camera. Leslie took the lead did the interview on behalf of the team. She did great!!!
After a great day we took of to get our bikes out of the shop. Remember, the bikes were damaged in their "Trip Down the Highway" in Colorado. So Ken, our driver for the day, dropped us off at the bike shop where they were repaired. In all of the excitement I forgot to take pics of us maneuvering our bikes through the Omaha Streets that are kind of like highways. It's days like this I miss the streets of Salt Lake City. Their streets were so WIDE and biker friendly!!!! However, we made it back to the hotel safe and sound. Tomorrow morning we say goodbye to Omaha. Which is bittersweet for me. This has been my favorite City so far because of the wonderful people I met here. This Midwest Hospitality is something to write home about!!!! I do have a train ride to look forward to...I have come to love the train very much!!! Well I'm off to get packing!!! 'Til Next Time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007!!! The College World Series of Baseball!!!!
Before my journey to Omaha, I had NEVER heard of The College World Series of Baseball. Today I had the pleasure of experiencing it first hand.
Leslie and I hit the main are to spread the word of our trip, and encourage people to be more "Eco-Friendly". Armed with some Organic Cotton Tee Shirts as "Give-Aways" we interacted with hundreds of people.
Les & I were so busy spreading the good news, we missed a jewel of Omaha's "Green"-ness. Luckily Steve and Doug pointed it out to us. The Trash Cans had the phrase "Keep Omaha Beautiful"
As it turns out, "Keep Omaha Beautiful" is the Mayor's slogan. It's a campaign to encourage people to have pride in Omaha and do their part to help preserve it. We thought it was pretty cool.
The people at the event really looked out for us. They gave us water to cool us off and great info about the days events.
All in all today was great day!! We interacted with hundreds of people....gave out who knows how many shirts and cards. We got to experience Omaha in Full Bloom!!! Tomorrow, we are off to work with the City. They are taking us to a park to participate in a clean up. We have to get up pretty early. 'Til Next Time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 June 17 Congratulations Kris & Tim!!!
After a eventful trip into Omaha yesterday, I was ready to have a good time. Thanks to Kris and Tim, the guys and girls had rooms two rooms to sleep in last night. The BIG day was here and all of us ECO Trippers were invited to the wedding. So I got myself ready, but the others, who due to lack of sleep from a long night's work, were unable to attend.
Bearing the well wishes of my fellow Eco Trippers, I forged ahead to fulfill my promise to the Bride and her Bridal Party to do their make-up. I met them in the most serene state that I have EVER seen a bridal party!! Kris and her girls were SO calm and collected, it was unreal!!
I did the make-up for the bride and she was quite pleased. She was also very thankful, but this was just the least that I could do as a thank you for all that they did for us. I then proceeded to do make up for the rest of the Bridal Party and they too, were pleased with the outcome!!! Feeling great, and looking it too, we all rode over to the wedding location together.
This Wedding was a lot different than any wedding that I had been to, but in a good way. We all sat down to dinner together BEFORE the wedding began. So Bride, Groom and all of us sat down to a tasty meal and good conversation. This way, everyone could enjoy the wedding without the roar of hunger in the air. After dinner, Kris presented me with a corsage and asked me to be one of her attendants!!! I was so honored and humbled that she would want to bestow me with such an honor. I gladly accepted and posed for pictures alongside the bridal party during the photo session. The Bridal party and I, the Impromptu Attendant.
At sunset, Kris and Tim exchanged Vows in a lovely ceremony. Kris and Tim exchanging Vows.
Soon after the Bride and Groom, were announced as Husband and Wife, they cut the cake. Not long after that it was time to Party!!! Never the one to let good music go to waste, I got up and started dancing...even showing some on the guests how to do The Electric Slide and the Cha Cha!!! The Maid of Honor & a Groomsmen "Getting Funky With It"
The Best Man and I "Cutting a Rug"
Needless to say, I had a great time!!! Everyone there was asking me for the rest of the Eco Trippers were. They have heard so much about us, and were excited to meet the team. However, I represented the team and expressed the gratitude and appreciation of the team. I also had a good enough time for the team as well!!! Tomorrow, the team and I are off The College World Series. We're going to spread the good Eco Friendly, word with the spectators of the event. I have never been to something like this before and I am looking forward to it!!! 'Till Next Time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 It's Going Down!!!
Friday June 15th, 2007 This blog is going to be a long one so bear with me...but this story just HAS to be told. Wow, let's just say that getting to Omaha was an event!! We Started out, eager to go and full of excitement!! Omaha or Bust!!! That was my Motto while we were on our way!!!
We got into our Chevrolet Aveo, loaded ourselves and our stuff into the car. Then secured all four bikes to the top of the car using the professionally installed bike rack.
After about three hours into our trip, we had a mishap. While driving down the highway...all four of our bikes...still attached to the bike rack...detached from the car and went down the highway behind us. Dwight & Paula Taylor, some Good Samiritans, stopped to help us move the bikes off the highway, get the bikes & bike rack back on the car, so that we could get moving again. They helped us bunjee, tape and secure that bike rack to the car. Not before long, all four of those bikes were back on the car and ready to go!!
We made it to Omaha safely. We were so thankful. However, this trip still had a few tricks up it's sleeve for us. Omaha, is a pretty easy going and laid back town most of the time...except for one time of year during the College World Championship of Baseball. And wouldn't you know it we arrive in Omaha during this very time. We arrived at our hotel only to discover that we do NOT have two rooms for the night. We had only one hotel room, with one bed. Due to the College World Championship, our hotel, and every other hotel in Omaha, were sold out. As we were debating on what to do, another couple, Kris & Tim overheard us. Kris and Tim were getting married the next day and were facing a dilemma of their own. They had paid for a room for one of their guests that canceled. Due to the Hotel's Policy, they did NOT qualify for a refund. So with no other recourse, they decided to take the Bride & Bridesmaid's Dresses over to the Hotel so that they would have one less thing to do on the day of the wedding. This is when we ran into them.
Going above and beyond a general act of kindness, the bride, Kris, offered to let us use the room that was playing host to her attire for the night if we promised that we would guard those dresses with our lives. We were so blown away and thankful for her kindness to us. Here we were, perfect strangers, but she was willing to trust us with her wedding gown!!! We humbly accepted and thanks to Kris and Tim, we had two rooms. Ever so grateful, I decided it was time to put some of my beauty pageant skills to use. I offered to do the Bridal Party's Make-Up as a "Thank You" to Kris for all that she did to us. She was very glad, because she had everything else, except a make up artist. She then in turn did another kind thing and invited all of us Eco Trippers to the wedding tomorrow!!! I gladly accepted and we went our separate ways for the night. So I am off to bed now. I am going to give my make-up brushes a good washing to get ready for tomorrow. I am so thankful that there are still good people in the world!!! 'Till Next Time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 June 15 Free Strawberries?!!!
Today my team mates and I took on the 16th Street Mall to share the "Good of the Land"....the Strawberries that we picked at Berry Patch Farms yesterday. The Set up we put together to distribute the Strawberries.
We were so full of excitement, just ready to share the BEST Strawberries that I had ever tasted with the people of Denver. We wanted them to see that locally grown, organic produce, is just as good, if not better than other alternatives.
While some people were delighted to see us, and sampled our good Strawberries...not everyone was as excited as we were. Some were even, dare I say, reluctant to try the Strawberries.
It just seemed that some people, couldn't quite grasp the concept that the Strawberries were FREE!!! Some thought that we were just giving them samples, to then trying and encourage them to buy a carton...but this was not the case. We just wanted to share the good of the land with everyone. I guess some people couldn't appreciate the random act of PURE kindness.
Never the ones to let anything hold us back, we out on our best attitudes and the Strawberries started going. Even though some people STILL couldn't understand that they were TOTALLY FREE...others came on by, took the time to talk to us...AND enjoyed some FREE, organic and locally Grown Strawberries!!! All in all the day was a success!!! We came home empty handed, which in this case was a good thing!!! Tomorrow we set out for Omaha, Nebraska!!! It's going to be us, The Aveo & The Open Road. Wish us well!! See you in Omaha!!!! Marshana June 14 A "Berry-Wonderful" Day
Last night, my team mates and I pulled into Denver pretty late. Weary from the almost 16 hour journey, we got a surprising "pick me up". The Official Spaces Eco Trip Car. Courtesy of Chevrolet, the Aveo gets upwards of 38 miles per gallon. Now that's fuel efficient!!!
We were so excited about the car, it was more than we had expected! This morning the team and I were headed to Berry Patch Farms to pick some Organic Strawberries. So armed with a map and ambition, we piled into the car and took off!!!
We arrived at Berry Patch Farm eager to get started...we were joined by some very special guests. The Sign at the Entrance to Berry Patch Farms.
Carol, the Marketing Director for The United States Miss Earth Pageant and I.
Leslie, photographing McGuire's Cousin Elissa, & Aunt Ruth...who stopped on by for some Berry Picking Fun!
I had never been Berry Picking before and if I can "Wax My Own car"...I'd say I did pretty good!! These are just some of the berries that I picked. By the time I was done, I had picked double that amount!!
So I bet you're wondering what we did with all of those Strawberries. Of course we ate some of them, but not all. We will be sharing these Strawberries with the patrons of the 16th Street Mall tomorrow. If you're in the Denver area, you can stop by between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM you can sample some of the BEST and SWEETEST Strawberries I have EVER tasted!!! See you there!!! Marshana, Miss Earth New York 2007 June 12 Colorado Bound!!!
We reached the Salt Lake City Train Station this morning eager to re-board the California Zephyr and move on to Denver. However, the train was running a few hours behind so instead of leaving at 3:45 AM, the train didn't show up until 6:45 AM...and we didn't get rolling until after 7:00 AM!!!!
From all accounts, I heard that this trip would offer some of the BEST America has to see. The folks who I joined for lunch confirmed this. They were on this train all the way to Chicago. They me that whenever they get the chance, they take this train ride.
Well not before too long, I finally saw what all of the hype was about. The Colorado River. This picture really doesn't do it justice.
Believe it or not , I am passing through some of the BEST scenery I have seen on this trip to date!! However, it has begun to rain and it's not photographing well. My fellow passengers are a little disappointed that we can't fully view and appreciate what is around us right now. But I am still so glad that I got to see it!! Tomorrow, the team and I are off to a great project tomorrow. Here is the info: Project: Pick berries at Berry Patch Farms (local organic farm) and speak with farmers about organic farming Location: Berry Patch Farms, 13785 Potomac St., Brighton, Colorado Time: 1:30 PM If you're in the area, we would love to have you all come on by and join us!!! 'Til Next Time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 Eco Trippers Take On City Hall!!!
Today the Eco Trippers went to City Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah to meet with a very special person. Jordan Gates is the Environmental Advisor to Mayor Anderson. Jordan was kind enough to take the time to meet with us to discuss environmental issues.
We were eager, firing away questions at Jordan...He was most helpful in Answering them.
Mayor Anderson is very passionate about the environment. So much so that one of the first things he did when he took office was replace all of the light bulbs to CFL's (Compact Florescent Light bulbs). So I asked Jordan about that. The answer he gave me was astounding!! I "Heart" Salt Lake City!!!
Jordan told me that the City invested $12,000 up front to change all of the light bulbs. However, in the first year, that change saved them $26,000 on their electric bill!!! They saved over double what they had invested!!! By the second year, they saved another $33,000. All of that savings for such a small effort!!
Did you know that if everyone changed just ONE light bulbs in their home to a CFL...that would reduce as much carbon emissions as taking ONE MILLION cars off the road!!!! It's a small action that anyone can take...and yes, that means YOU!!! Just something for you all to think about in case you were looking for a way to help the environment. Later tonight, (Technically tomorrow morning) we will be getting back on the Train to head to Denver Colorado...another City that I have yet to venture to!!! I am looking forward to the train ride!!! From all accounts, the journey from Salt Lake City to Denver via train provides some of the BEST scenery that this country has to offer! I can't wait!! 'Till Next Time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 June 10 Two Projects, One Day!!!
So today we had two "Green Challenges" lined up for us. The sun was high, the breeze was light and the mood was just right. We set out on our bikes and headed to The Day Riverside Library to plant some willows.
This project was a lot fun, getting my hands dirty...and helping the Earth. As I was in there I made a new friend!! If you look closely at my hand, you will see an Earth Worm!!! I was very fascinated by it!!
I named my new friend, the Earth Worm, Brooklyn...in honor of my hometown. After I had bonded with Brooklyn, I returned it to the Earth...where it was most happy. After things wrapped up, we hopped on our bikes and headed down to Bend in the River for our next project.
From left to right, Steve & Rebecca.
We spent the afternoon removing a noxious, invasive weed. This plant was NO joke, we had to shovel and get it out by the roots!!! However, our efforts were not in vain. Just look at the amount we removed!!!
After a successful day helping the environment, we biked back to the hotel and I called it a night. Today was an ambitious day and I need my rest. Tomorrow we are heading to City Hall to meet with the Mayor of Salt Lake City's Environmental Advisor. This should be pretty interesting and I am looking forward to it with expectancy. 'Til Next Time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 Sightseeing in Salt Lake City!!!
We pulled into Salt Lake City, behind schedule, but still early this morning...at seven or eight. I got a lil' confused, we lost an hour due to the time change. We're on mountain time now. Even though I was a bit weary from the 22 plus hours on the train, I was not about to let that stop me from getting out there and sightseeing. Assembly Hall @ Temple Square
My first stop was Temple Square. Located in Downtown, Temple Square is the Heart of Salt Lake City...so much so, that all of the streets are numbered according to their distance from Temple Square. The higher the number, the farther away you are...the lower the number, the close you are.
After seeing all that I could see there I was off to see more sights via the "Light Rail". Me aboard the "Light Rail" which I found very easy to use & affordable.
As most of you all know, Salt Lake City was home to The 2002 Winter Olympics...I wanted to see the Cauldron that held the Olympic Flame...
Everywhere you go here in Salt lake City you see signs of the Winter Olympic Games. The City is very proud of it's part in Olympic History.
I did quite a bit more sightseeing before I called it quits and headed back to the hotel. You can check out today's photo album to see more of the pictures. Tomorrow we have not one, but two exciting "Green Challenges" lined up for us. Here is the info below: Sunday, 6/10/07 Project: Urban Forestry Project – Eco Garden: building terraces around fruit trees Location: Day Riverside Library (garden plot is directly south of this library): 1575 West, 1000 North, Salt Lake City, UT Time: 10 AM – 1PM
Bend The River Project: 1030 West Fremont Avenue (1100 South) Salt Lake City, Utah 84104 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Remember, if you are in the area, you are more than welcome to come on out and get your hands dirty with us. The invitation to be a part of this experience is "OPEN & ENDLESS". 'Til Next Time! Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 June 09 San Fran to Salt Lake City!!!
As I write this, I am aboard the California Zephyr on my way to Salt Lake City Utah!!! I am overjoyed as I have never been there and I want to see all the sights!!! However, the train ride there is providing a lot of sights!!!
I have been pleasantly surprised by all of the "Eco-Conscious" people that I have met on this train. McGuire & I met a nice couple at lunch who were able to "school" me on Bio Diesel Fuel, the different percentages and so on. They were so nice, kind and thoroughly excited about our trip and what we were doing. They are on this train for three days going to Chicago...I wish them well. Me and the scenery. Donner Lake and the Donner Family have a rich history. It's too much to tell here. But if you get the chance you should read up on it.
When we get to Salt Lake City tomorrow, I plan on seeing all that SLC has too offer...including The 2002 Winter Olympics Site. I'm also excited to meet more "Eco-Conscious" people, as they are a real delight on this trip. 'Till next time, Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 June 08 Go Green, Go Fabulous!!!!!
Going Green doesn't mean that you have to give up any of the creature comforts that you have come to know and love The team with Stefan Muhle, General manager of the Orchard Garden Hotel
We got to see "Green" with a little bit of luxury. At first sight the hotel doesn't look different from any other.
The rooms looked great and relaxing...but a closer look revealed the room's "Green" elements.
The Carpets, toiletries and even the way the laundry is done, are all done in eco-friendly ways...there was even a recycling bin in the room!! But is was still a fabulous room..take a look!!
So, my friends, the lesson today is that "Green" doesn't fit into any one mold. You can still be "Green" & Fabulous at the same time. So don't be afraid, do something to be more "Green" in your life today. Tomorrow Morning we get on board the California Zerphyr on Amtrak to Salt Lake City, Utah!!!! I am excited and looking forward to the approximately 18 hour journey. Traveling cross country by train has been most enjoyable for me...I kind of wish the ride was longer....LOL. I will be reaching out to you all on the train tomorrow...so until next time. Go Green, Go Fabulous!!!! Marshana Miss Earth New York 2007 June 06 Save The Bay!!!
Day two in San Francisco was one filled with excitement and adventure! We went over to Oakland to participate in the Save the Bay Project. Well our first challenge was getting to Oakland on the Bay Area Rapid Transit system...commonly know as the BART. The team with the Station Agent who was kind enough to show us how to use the Ticket Vending Machine.
As you all can see, we weren't alone, we not only had to get ourselves on the Bart, but all four of our bikes. It's a good thing that the bikes are light because they are not allowed on the escalators or the elevators.
After a quick check of the map, we all made the descent down the stairs with our bikes and made it down to the platform. "Hedge" on the Platform of the BART.
Me and my Bike on the BART to Oakland. A little info about the BART you need to know. You must keep your ticket as you have to swipe it to exit at your destination station.
After a short ride we made it to our stop. Got off the train and biked just under a mile to our destination...The Martin Luther King Shoreline Park. We met up with the Save the Bay Organization to plant some Salt Grass. This is the Salt Grass that we planted that is good for the Bay.
In the midst of all of the fun we got a surprise visitor!! After reading our blog and seeing where we were going to be next, Leslie's Uncle Tom stopped on by to see us.
After a great day with Save The Bay, it was time to head back to San Fran.
Those words couldn't be more true. Without this great team of people, this trip just would NOT be as enjoyable!! And that my friends brought our "Green Challenge" for Day Two in San Fran to an end. Tomorrow, we will be visiting a "Green" Hotel called The Orchard Garden Hotel. Here is the info: Wednesday June 7, 2007 1:30 PM So if you are in our area, sop on by and see us!! We would love to have you! 'Till Next Time, Marshana A Street Car Named...???
This morning marked the end of a 22 hour train ride that was just so beautiful!! If you can take the train across country you should. We road the Coast Starlight from Seattle to San Fran and it was such a delight. You don't miss any of the creature comforts that you're accustomed to. On that train I had three hot meals by a most pleasant waitress named Shelly, a comfy bed to sleep on and a "One of a Kind" experience! The Coast Starlight is the only train in America with a Parlor Car. The Coast Starlight's Parlor Car. The only one in the country!!! The views from that car were just breathtaking!!
Parlor Cars were most popular in the early 1950's...but their popularity waned over the years. Amtrak was lucky enough to acquire very few of them. However, due to the costly nature of maintaining a car such as this one, they discontinued the Parlor Car service. Well the guests of Amtrak were "Not Letting it Go Down Like that"...they petitioned Amtrak, and let them know that they wanted the Parlor Car Service to remain. Boy am I glad they spoke up...just five days after Amtrak discontinued the Parlor Car Service, it was back on!!! So my fellow Eco-Trippers and I made it to our hotel in the Little Japan area of San Francisco thanks to the kindness of the Amtrak shuttle bus driver. When you get off the train for San Fran...you really get off in Emeryville, then take a bus provided by Amtrak into downtown. We had NO idea how we were going to get ourselves, our stuff and four bikes in boxes to the Hotel. We were pleasantly surprised when the Bus Driver took us over two miles out of his way to the hotel...and we were so grateful!
So Leslie and I walk into the room and this is what greets us...a lovely Asian Inspired room. I really like it in this room...it's very chic and stylish, just like me! Even with this fabulous room I wasn't in it for very long...I was ready to head out into San Fran to see all of the "Inner City" nature & plants. Being the "City Girl" that I am, I can appreciate the little touches of greenery that make city life more peaceful.
From the Hotel, I set out on foot with a map and curiosity! My first stop was Union Square. Much unlike the Union Square that I know back in New York...I found some great "Green Life".
After a quick bite to eat I was off to Fisherman's Wharf. Public Transportation is here is affordable and very cool. I boarded a Street Car named...well it didn't really have a name...but a number. Any way you slice it, it was a pretty awesome!
I don't know how many of you all remember a popular commercial from at least ten years back. Well let me be the one to tell you that Rice-a-Roni is not the only San Francisco treat...lol...Fisherman's Wharf is also!!! I was such a treat when I got there, the shops, the people and the views...just inspiring!
After a day of exploration...I was ready to head back in the direction of the hotel. So I hoped on a cable car.
Well my friends, I am off to bed. My fellow Eco-Trippers & I have a "Green Challenge" tomorrow. Don't forget...if you all are in the San Fran area, you are welcome to participate. Here if that information, one more time: San Francisco, CA 6/6/07 Location: MLK Jr. Regional Shoreline Park Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM Hope to See You There!!!
Marshana June 04 Seattle to San Fran
So my time in Seattle has come to an end...but never one to let good things pass me by, I went out to Seattle to see some of the wonderful sights that Seattle is known for...first stop, the Space Needle!!!
So Leslie & I were feeling a lil' wacky & decided to have some fun in the Space needle gift shop.
While Leslie and I were picking out our wares at The Space Needle Gift Shop...a nice, Eco-Loving man named Jake whom we had met a short while before just outside, came into the Space Needle Gift Shop to return Leslie's Camera Case. We were speaking with him earlier about his Eco-Friendly Jeep that was run on Bio Fuel (Vegetable Oil...basically) and his love for the environment. He was working with a really great company that provided "Green" Adventure Tours. Well I guess in all the excitement we had walked away and left Leslie's camera case behind. Twenty-Five minutes must have gone by when along came Jake to give us the case back. Now that was just so kind and generous. He had to have driven way out of his way and then back to return it. So thanks to Jake, his wife & their Husky Dog for the kindness, we really appreciate it!!! As I write this, I am on the Coast Starlight Train to San Francisco. I must say that this is very peaceful & serene. The views are pretty amazing...
So check us out in San Fran if you can. Here is the location of where we will be & what we will be doing: San Francisco, CA 6/6/07 (Wednesday) Location: MLK Jr. Regional Shoreline Park Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM I do hope that if you are in the San Francisco area that you will come on by, check us out & lend a helping hand...This is as much your trip as it is ours!! Till Next Time!! Marshana June 03 See Me In Seattle!!
Oh my...look at us...happy and free in Seattle. I was so happy to get here and meet my team mates face to face. They were each even more amazing in person! We are each so different...but we each have the same common goal...protecting the environment and that is so awesome!!!
Our first stop was at Microsoft Headquarters in Redmond. We got to meet the WONDERFUL staff behind this great project. Marty, whom I met in NYC at my audition was ,there to greet us and show us around the gorgeous Microsoft Campus. As you can see we got a little carried away enjoying the scenery.
Miss Earth New York...all the way in Washington at Microsoft!!
After a great day on The Microsoft Campus, Marty took us out to GREAT restaurant in Downtown Kirkland. There was an amazing view of Lake Washington...simply gorgeous.
On Saturday we did our first "Green Project" We spent some time in Seward Park removing English Ivy. English Ivy grows very well and can be invasive. It spreads very rapidly and will spread over ANYTHING it it's path...including other plants. Eventually it kills the plants and trees in it's path!!! The folks over at Earthcorp organized Ivy removal so that we could save the trees and other plants. It was a great experience for me. Being the "City Girl" on this trip the only Ivy I see is the kind that grows on buildings. The only "country life" I know is the "Concrete Jungle"...and life back in my parents home, Jamaica. But it was so great to walk on trails and through the woods. I'm excited about this trip and all that we are doing for the environment! I am so grateful that I get to take this message across country and beyond my comfort zone of Brooklyn...stay tuned!!! Marshana |
